this is part of the zukka cat cafe cinematic universe, more specifically, it takes place a little bit before together furever, but reading that isn't necessary to understand this ficlet <3

97. "I apologise sincerely if my handsome/beautiful face has kept you awake all night."

"Druk is still sleeping on your side of the bed," Zuko says, flipping the camera around to show Sokka their cat curled up on top of the blanket.

"Aww," Sokka beams. "He misses me! That's so sweet."

Zuko lies down on the bed next to the cat, holding his phone in the air, and Druk lets out a soft meow before scooting closer and resting his head on Zuko's shoulder.

"Any fun plans for tomorrow?" Zuko asks, watching Sokka through the screen as he navigates his tiny dorm in Madird to grab a fork to eat his takeout dinner with.

"We're leaving in the morning to take the train to Barcelona, so that should be fun. What are you up to tomorrow?"

"Meeting Uncle and Azula for tea right before the shop opens, which is in," he taps his screen to check the time and groans, "five hours."

"Damn," Sokka says, his mouth full, and he swallows the bite he's chewing before adding, "Well, I apologize sincerely if my handsome face has kept you awake all night."

"Eh. I'll survive," Zuko replies, as if Facetiming Sokka for several hours wasn't the only thing he wanted to do with his Friday evening and the idea of it kept him sane during work all day.

"I was talking to the cat."

Zuko rolls his eyes. "You ass."

Sokka laughs, then it dies down and he just smiles at Zuko without saying anything for a few moments. "I didn't mean to keep you up late when you have an early day tomorrow, but you also make it really difficult to say goodbye."

Zuko swallows hard. The last few weeks without Sokka have been lonely, but he has been trying to put on a brave face so that Sokka remembers to enjoy his study abroad and not worry about his boyfriend brooding at home and suffering from cuddle depravation. Watching the way that Sokka looks at him now, Zuko knows that he is also having a hard time getting used to the distance, even a month into his program.

Zuko forces a smile. "Two months to go," he says quietly, and Sokka gives him a shaky smile in return.

"Yeah. We can wait two more months, right? Two more months of being 3,734 miles apart. It'll be over before we know it."

"Good, because Druk here is really lonely without you, and he misses falling asleep by your side and waking up to you in the morning," Zuko says, his throat feeling tight. He blinks quickly.

"Aw, well tell Druk I miss him too and he should get some beauty sleep but I can't wait to talk to him tomorrow and hear all about his day."

Zuko laughs. "Tomorrow. I'll text you when I'm free, but don't miss out on doing anything fun so you can talk to me. You'll always have me, but you won't always be in Barcelona, so make the most of it, yeah?"

"Yeah, I'll always have you," Sokka repeats softly.

Zuko knows if he doesn't exercise the willpower to end this call soon, he'll decide he would rather talk to Sokka all night than get any sleep, and he's already lost a fair amount of rest without his boyfriend home, so he lets out a sigh. "Goodnight. I'll talk to you soon, okay?"

"Not soon enough," Sokka shoots back, "but yeah, talk to you soon. Until then, I'll keep missing you and loving you."

Hakoda sighs wearily, dragging a hand down his face. In the dim light, Sokka thinks for the first time that his dad looks very old.

He starts his trek back to the village, only a short distance away from where he and Katara had been playing. When he gets there, it's bursting with activity. People all around him frantically push past each other, murmuring to each other in hushed tones. Sokka picks out a few repeated words and phrases, like Chief and kidnapping and can't find Sokka anywhere.

i love them so much actually because yuuji let's megumi feel and they love each other so much whether it's platonic or not and fushiguro goes feral when he's separated from itadori or when itadori's life is at risk because it's never about him it's about the man he loves and if itadori dies he dies and it goes both ways for the both of them because they love each other. fushiguro has the cutest small smile reserved just for itadori and you just know that itadori loves that smile and tries everything to get fushiguro to smile like that. it's about 'i care about you i would die for you/i care about you more i would die for you more', it's about following each other to the end of the world, it's about you jump i jump, it's about hands, it's about being happy and being kids together, it's about 'i love him on purpose' (personal reasons…). they are so amazing and they would do anything for each other and they understand each other so well it's crazy i love them anyways i'm sorry i always think about them

hi vee i had a dream about you last night where basically we were in class together, but it was taught by my sound professor, which was weird because it was actually a band class? anyways he was taking attendance and said that when our names were called we could either get a dvd, cd, or record that he had up at the front. so we're all going up and stuff and i was of course going to grab a queen record, cause queen is one of my favorite bands. but right as i got there this guy took the last one, and threw the queen cd on the floor.

so i was like okay well a queen cd is better than nothing, so i picked it up from the floor. and basically this cd was like a compilation of five cds with their early music on it and stuff??? it was very weird. so i go back to my seat next to you, and i was looking at this cd book, and it had this label that has a man's name that i can't remember now but i somehow knew was your dad's name in the dream. and it also said "happy birthday vee" on the label.

so i was like holy shit i have an old cd of vee's….. and when i showed you, it pissed you off. like genuine fury, you were crying and screaming and you walked out of class and stuff. i followed you, and somehow we ended up at this huge complex that was your house, except it was like a beach front property? and you weren't letting me into your room cause you were mad at me so i was sitting outside. and your mom, who looked like a mix between kamala harris and my old high school principal, came up and was like "what did you want to say?" so i rambled through this apology about how i didn't realize what it meant when i picked it and stuff, and she nods and goes. "you should start running."

so i look up and see you HURTLING towards me and i take off sprinting, but i'm a bad runner so you caught me and tackled me and we ended up in the grass. and i apologized and stuff and i was talking about how this cd had a book included in it that's basically your diary that you published, and you included past asks with it and stuff??? it was so weird. anyways i apologized and you were like it's alright. are you gonna keep them? and i said well duh i need music for my car! and then the dream ended and i woke up.

anyways this was so long i'm sorry. but i thought it was funny and wanted to tell you about it. i hope you have a most excellent day!!!!!!!!
